Samsung to put open-source Tizen OS on… TVs?

Tizen logoThe open-source operating system Tizen could arrive packaged in Samsung’s televisions by next year, according to CNET. Boo-Keun Yoon, co-CEO of Samsung, confirmed that the OS is not only destined for mobile devices and TVs but appliances as well.

Samsung to put open-source Tizen OS on… TVs?

Intel and Samsung partnered to work on Tizen back in 2011, with the first release arriving in January 2012. Intel is working on its own set of Tizen devices, while Samsung has yet to formally release any products using the operating system. To be fair, Samsung has been overwhelmingly successful, and likely busy, with the Android side of their business.

Samsung's line of smart TVs has also long been a work in progress. The most recent versions of the Smart TV platform seemed overwrought and bloated. Recentering its approach with a different OS might force the company to rethink some of the choices it’s made.

Samsung’s first Tizen phone’s release was pushed back a few times and is now set for release in the fourth quarter of this year.
