After crunching some number Opera Software has concluded that, between Opera Mini and Opera Mobile, it has surpassed 100 million unique mobile users. Opera Mobile is said to have about 15 million users, while Opera Mini has topped 90.36 million users in January.
"Experts all have some date when they claim the mobile Web will overtake the PC web - we're watching that transition now,” said Jon von Tetzchner, Co-founder of Opera Software. "But, rather than think of numbers, we think of people. 100 million is the beginning of a new era for the Web. In the next few years, hundreds of millions of people will take their first baby steps online. They will make their voices heard across their country and around the world. They will not only discover new ideas, but contribute their own. We defend those voices and celebrate those ideas. It is why we believe access to the Web is a universal right, and no device is more universal than a mobile phone."
The main catalyst to Opera's mobile success, Opera Mini, has seen its install base grow by 5.6% compared to December 2010 and by 81.6% from January 2011, and it's not stopping here. In fact, that the Mobile World Congress next week, new Opera Mini versions for Android, iPhone, J2ME, BlackBerry, Symbian and the iPad will be showcased. Also, Opera Mobile updates are en route for Android and Symbian and they will be revealed in Barcelona.
