Key electronics producers today formed a new coalition to boost the creation of Linux-based devices. Linaro's partners ARM, Freescale, IBM, Samsung, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments are all providing software and tools to help bring out open-source tablets, and other devices, easier and sooner. The help won't be limited to pure Linux and will include Android, MeeGo, webOS and other variants that are mostly open.
The effort is planned to avoid some of the fragmentation in Linux, where companies are often only working on a small market or a small amount of possible hardware. Chip designers involved in Linaro also hope to improve the battery life, speed and other aspects in software, not just hardware.
Linaro's first software should be ready in November and will focus mostly on improvements for ARM Cortex-running devices.
