Microsoft reportedly starts testing Office for Android apps

Microsoft Office logoMicrosoft is building a full suite of Office apps for Android, a report claims. Following the official port to the iPad it launched in March, Microsoft is said to be privately testing separate apps for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for the mobile operating system, with the company apparently seeking businesses and individuals to provide feedback on pre-release versions.

Sources of The Verge claim Microsoft is looking toward a possible launch of the Office suite on Android later this year, around the same time as an updated Office for Mac. It is also said that Microsoft will be releasing the Android version before it makes a tablet-friendly version of Office for Windows, which is claimed to be due in early 2015.

Word for iPad

The app would in theory replace the existing Office Mobile for Android app currently provided by Microsoft. If it follows the same scheme as Office for iPad, it should offer the ability to view and share documents at no charge, with editing and more advanced features forming part of an Office 365 subscription.
