To showcase what Symbian's S60 operating system for mobile devices is capable of, some of the S60 on Symbian Customer Operations (SOSCO) team members have compiled the OS via GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) and have it running on an unmodified Intel Atom CPU and mainboard. At the same time, the Symbian team hopes to generate some interest in such a platform in the form of an investor. The group hopes to show Symbian is not limited by its historical with ARM-based processors and can make technical leaps.
A Symbian blogger showing the technology was impressed with the speed of the user interface and application load times when the system was running, and the platform quickly allowed the testers to place a call using a connected baseband modem. An OpenGL demo was running on the platform port as well.
It's not known how soon a finished port of S60 would be available for Atom, though the software developer hopes it will be used for more than just netbooks or other designs that lend themselves to mobile operating systems.
