Skype, the record holder: 45 million users online at the same time

Skype logoВWhile Microsoft is getting ready to dress Skype in its very special Metro suit, the VoIP application is breaking new records.

Last week, no less than 45,469,977 users were online on Skype at the same time, according to data published by TechCrunch and provided by “a source close to Skype.”

What’s more, 3 million active concurrent users were added only in a single month, with 2012 bringing an increase of no less than 70 percent, as compared to the previous year.

The number of concurrent Skype users is growing by 8 percent every month, with official figures pointing out that Skype had 250 million connected users in June 2012.

Furthermore, the total download statistics for the Skype client recently reached 3,202,250,105.

Microsoft is yet to confirm these figures, but instead the company seems to be paying much more attention to the Metro version of the app that’s designed for Windows 8 users.

We’re only two weeks away from the public launch of the new OS and the Metro version of Skype has already been spotted in the United States.

While the application seems to be ready for its public debut, it appears that Microsoft doesn’t plan to unveil it before the October 26 Windows 8 launch date.

Instead, Microsoft intends to bundle the Metro Skype into the final build of Windows 8 and deliver it to all new buyers.

Sadly, Windows 8 early adopters cannot give a spin to the new Skype version yet, but rumor has it that Microsoft may release a preview build just before the Windows 8 debut.
