Thinking that mistakes happen all the time (it comes with the territory for the human element) Google's Gmail team has developed a feature which enables Gmail users to restore their Contacts list to a previous date in the past 30 days and get back contacts they have deleted.
The Restore contacts function can be found in the More actions menu in the Contacts section, or at least it should be if the updated rolled out nicely and reached your location.
