Sony offers server with 4K content to 84-inch UHDTV owners

Sony logoOne issue early adopters face is the availability of content for their new hardware, with the latest example of such an occurrence being 4K, or Ultra HD content. Sony's $25,000, 84-inch XBR 4K LED TV may be able to upconvert 1080p content to near UHD resolution, but native UHD content isn't readily available. Sony is looking to address that with a new piece of hardware it will lease out to owners of the XBR84X900 that contains some native UHD content.

Called the Sony Ultra High Definition Video Player, the hard-disc server will contain 10 full-length Hollywood movies, and a gallery of shorter videos from Red Bull Media House. The server will only be loaned out to US buyers of the big TV.

Otherwise included is an Xperia Tablet S to control the experience thanks to a preloaded app. The 4K movies included on the server are The Amazing Spiderman, Total Recall (2012), The Karate Kid (2010), Salt, Battle Los Angeles, The Other Guys, Bad Teacher, That's My Boy, Taxi Driver, and The Bridge on the River Kwai. The Red Bull content includes The Athlete Machine: Red Bull Kluge and four acoustic performances of songs from Red Bull Records' Heaven's Basement's new record, Filthy Empire.

Sony will update the content of the server as time goes on as well.
