Amazon has begun sending out media invitations for a news conference scheduled for September 6, though the online retail giant has not revealed the subject of the event. AllThingsD reports that invitations started going out today, inviting press contacts to an event in Santa Monica, California. The event is to be held at the Barker Hangar, and speculation abounds that Amazon will be unveiling a refresh of its Kindle line of devices.
This year's press event comes earlier in the year than did last year's Amazon conference, wherein the company pulled back the curtains on the Kindle Fire, its first foray into the tablet market. It also comes just a day before some sources believe that Apple will be unveiling its new iPhone and perhaps other products, though other sources peg Apple's event for September 12.
Current speculation is that the company will be unveiling a refresh of its entire line of Kindle devices, including the plain e-readers as well as the Kindle Fire tablet. The refresh of the Kindle is said to bring a front-lit model making for easier night reading, though possibly at the expense of battery life. The Kindle Fire refresh has been a source for much speculation, with rumors ranging from a line of differently-sized Kindle Fires to ad-supported models and more.
