LG selected by Korean government to develop 60-inch flexible OLED displays

LG logoIn confirmation of last month's rumors, the Korean government has selected LG Display to lead an effort to develop 60-inch flexible OLED displays by 2017 as part of its Future Flagship Program, The Korea Herald reports. This selection represents a pretty big win for LG against display competitor Samsung, which has been working on flexible OLED technology for quite some time.

LG selected by Korean government to develop 60-inch flexible OLED displays

Currently the world's largest flexible OLED display measures just 7.4 inches, so the LG-led consortium has a great deal of research and development ahead to create significantly larger transparent and flexible OLED displays. The program, led by The Ministry of Knowledge Economy, seeks to bolster Korea's economy by creating 840,000 jobs and exports valued at $56 billion. If the project succeeds in producing large-scale flexible and transparent OLED screens by 2017, they could be used in stores, bus stations, or variety of other commercial applications.
