LG pioneers 3D streaming

LG logoLG has become the launch platform for a new 3D streaming standard.

A company called DDD Inc, which specializes in offering 3D video technologies, has launched a new TV app called Yabazam 3D. It's available exclusively through the LG smart TV platform.

Customers who own an LG 3D TV can download the app, which has been around for a couple weeks in a testing phase, for free. In fact, it became the most popular free LG TV app in just one week.

The Yabazam platform was first released in 2009, but finding distribution has been difficult. It was one of the first portals to offer 3D streaming content, but targeting that content to a user base that is able to watch in 3D is a challenge.

Last year, Samsung launched a streaming 3D video app. However, the company has failed to keep it updated with fresh and interesting content. Samsung uses the RoxioNow platform.

So Yabazam turned to LG, and promises to offer a constantly updated stream of new and interesting 3D videos.

"The ability to stream 3D content straight to a 3D Smart TV is a great step for the 3D industry. LG’s 3D PC products include Yabazam 3D movie trailers and we welcome the opportunity to deliver 3D movies to LG’s Smart TV customers as well," said DDD CEO Chris Yewdall.

To date, more than 70,000 "content downloads" have been triggered through th TV app, DDD said.
