Sony may have a phone running Windows Phone 7

Sony logoThe matrimonial relationship between Sony and Android may not be as monogamous as we all believed.

According to NokiaWP, leaked photos of a few new Sony phones included one phone running Windows Phone 7. The phone still brandishes the Sony Ericsson brand, so it's safe to assume that this prototype started out as an old endeavor back before Sony bought out Ericsson's stake of the company in October 2011.

In that same month, the president of Sony, Bert Nordberg, told The Wall Street Journal that although he was "curious about Windows Phone," he wouldn't feel "comfortable investing in a platform" that wasn't what he believed to be as good as Android.

That line of thinking, along with Sony's current family of Android-only Xperia phones (which includes the highly anticipated Sony Xperia S), gave us all the green light to assume that the manufacturer wasn't interested in other types of operating systems at all.

But perhaps this prototype says otherwise.

Sony may have a phone running Windows Phone 7

As CNET UK noted, if this phone is real, it would be the first Sony Windows Phone.

The last time Sony touched an OS from Microsoft was with the Aspen, back when Sony was called Sony Ericsson, and Windows Phone was called Windows Mobile. (Oh how times have changed.)

For now, we have yet to hear back from Sony to confirm these pictures, and it looks like we won't know more until next month, when Sony will reveal its new lineup at the Mobile World Congress.

So what do you guys think if Sony were to release a phone running Windows Phone 7? Could such a model compete with Nokia's Lumia 900 or HTC's Titan II, or should Sony tread safely with Android?
