Hitachi Displays Japan has just shown a new class of glasses-free 3D display for mobile devices. Sized at 4.5 inches, the IPS-based LCD is brighter than usual for mobile 3D displays, at a brighter 470cd/m2 brightness in 3D and 400cd/m2 in 2D mode. It also manages 720p when in 2D and has a higher quality lenticular lens.
In April of 2010, Hitachi showed a glasses-free 3D LCD that sported a 3.1-inch display with an 480x854 resolution. That previous-generation display used a parallax barrier method for the 3D effect.
Hitachi envisions the new 3D screens can be used in portable TVs, cellphones and handheld game consoles, although both Nintendo and Sony have already spoken up on their next-generation handhelds.
