Nokia may soon release a device that runs on a new OS, Maemo 6, dubbed Harmattan. Last mentioned in 2009, the software's future will be discussed in a devoted session at the upcoming MeeGo Conference in San Francisco late in May. Harmattan should be API-compatible with MeeGo 1.2 to let apps work in both, but it wouldn't behave exactly like MeeGo.
Maemo 5 was last seen on the Nokia N900, and the new OS might help raise interest in the MeeGo community. At the conference, the final name of the Harmattan OS will be decided for Nokia products. The similarities and differences to MeeGo will also be decided, as will details such as what the challenges of hosting open source activities would be, where the bugs would be filed and where the community apps should be published, among others.
The first device to ship with the Maemo 6 OS could be the N9 or N950, as suggested in earlier leaks.
