Nvidia wants a sexy Tegra 2 "superphone"

NVIDIA logoNvidia's CEO isn't satisfied with the current generation of smartphones. No, Jen-Hsun Huang says there is "room in the market" for a new breed of sleek devices known as "superphones."

According to DigiTimes, Huang described the mighty superphone as a device that is larger than an iPhone but smaller than a PC.

The phone - which Huang said could "open up" new opportunities in casual computing - would run Google's popular mobile Android OS, offer Internet connectivity and "satisfy" basic multimedia requirements.

Huang also opined that the replacement of netbooks by tablet PCs would only accelerate in the future, which is likely to create a potential segment for the superphone, somewhere between the crowded tablet and smartphone marketplaces.

Finally, Huang confirmed that Motorola was designing a tricked-out, dual-core Tegra 2-powered Droid superphone, which is expected to hit the streets sometime in 2011.

We're certainly looking forward, Jen-Hsun!

Yes, Tegra 2 is an awesome processor with lots of raw horsepower. So here's to 2011 - the year of Tegra!
