First-tier notebook brands Acer, Asustek Computer and Hewlett-Packard (HP) all plan to use AMD's Ontario APUs (CPUs that feature an integrated GPU) for their new netbook and ultra-thin notebooks set for launch during the first quarter of 2011, according to sources from notebook players.
AMD will start mass-production of its Ontario APU in early December using Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC's) 40nm process.
Although some market watchers are conservative about Ontario's sales performance due to weakening demand for ultra-thin notebooks and netbooks, AMD noted that the APUs' low power consumption, heat generation and price, plus strong CPU and graphics performance has already attracted several notebook players to place orders.
Some market watchers are optimistic about AMD's new notebook platform and believe the company has a chance of seeing its share in the global notebook market step up to 15% by the end of 2010.
