Apple iPhone 8 to feature a redesigned fingerprint sensor

Apple logoApple is expected to introduce a new design with the iPhone 8 and even offer a new fingerprint ID solution. There have been multiple talks about the new technology, and the latest report quotes industry sources saying that Apple has already selected the new solution.

Apple has decided to go with its own Authentec algorithm combined with Privaris glass identification technology for its new fingerprint ID solution. Apparently, Apple didn’t pick Synaptics' Natural ID touch fingerprint sensor nor Qualcomm's Sense ID fingerprint technology for its upcoming iPhone 8.

Apple’s Touch ID technology originally came from AuthenTec, the company that Apple bought in 2012. Three years later, the Cupertino company bought a number of patents relating to fingerprint and touchscreen technology, from Privaris.

The report adds that Apple’s new technology will be developed at TSMC’s 12-inch line using 65nm process technology. Production isn’t expected to start until September due to the redesigned fingerprint ID solution. Previous reports stated that Apple could start production of new iPhones in July, but the latest suggests that the date only applies to the other two iPhones. The iPhone 8 with OLED display would hit mass production in September.

Finally, the report mentions that the iPhone 8 will feature biometric authentication systems like ultrasound, aside from the rumored facial recognition and iris scanning technologies. Wireless charging will also come to the iPhone 8, together with an edge-to-edge OLED display made by Samsung.

Apple has filed multiple patents for fingerprint sensors built into the display, which would make it easier for users to authenticate and smartphone makers to create thinner phones with smaller bezels. There have been a number of companies like CrucialTec and Goodix that already developed the technology and will feature it on new phones to be launched this year. It remains to be seen what capabilities Apple’s new fingerprint ID solution will have.
