The 30% bug sees iPhone battery life dropping dramatically in iOS 10.1.1

Apple iPhone 7 logoIf you've updated your iPhone to iOS 10.1.1, you may have started to feel that your battery is not lasting as long as it used to. You are not alone; you could be experiencing what has been named the 30 percent bug.

Many users are complaining that their iPhones will suddenly drop from 30 percent battery charge to 1 percent, and then shutdown. The problem does not seem to affect one particular generation of iPhone, suggesting that the issue lies with iOS itself, but at the moment Apple does not have a fix available.

There is a fairly lengthy thread of discussion on the Apple support forum where users explain a number of different issues. As well as the sudden drop in battery level from 30 to 1 percent, others have said that their iPhone drains overnight even when it is switched off.

Strangely, when the battery level drops to 1 percent, a quick reboot when connected to a charger sees the level jump back up to 30 percent. Users are perplexed about what is going on, and Apple has been no help so far.

Neither downgrading to iOS 10.1 nor upgrading to iOS 10.2 beta fixes the problem, and some users who have been issued with replacement handsets say that the problem persists on new devices too. With no release date yet known for the final version of iOS 10.2, the only advice for those afflicted with the problem is to get in touch with Apple and hope for the best.
