Nvidia brings the GeForce GTX 10-Series GPUs to laptops

NVIDIA logoThe GeForce GTX 1080, 1070 and 1060 have won many awards, and Nvidia has designed three mobile versions of those GPUs with performance almost identical to that of their desktop counterparts.

The new GeForce GTX 1080, GeForce GTX 1070, and GeForce GTX 1060 are built on the company’s new Pascal architecture and offer significant performance increases over the previous 9-series GPUs.

Nvidia said the mobile 10-series will power new 120Hz G-sync panels, which are also launching, and enable higher overclocking potential and even better battery life.

With Pascal-architecture laptops, Nvidia is promising to offer the frenetic action of Overwatch and the stunning environments of Rise of the Tomb Raider at a fast 120 FPS, or higher. And if you’re the type of gamer who prefers even greater graphics over speed, 25x14 and 4K super high-resolution experiences are just as achievable with Pascal-powered GTX 10-Series laptops.

As a demonstration at the press unveiling of the new GeForce GTX 10-Series laptops, Nvidia overclocked MSI’s GT73 to a sustained 2GHz in id Software’s DOOM -- just as the company did on a desktop GeForce GTX 1080 at its unveiling.

The top-end GeForce GTX 1080 will get 8GB of GDDR5x RAM, a whopping 2,560 CUDA cores, and a boost clock speed of 1,733MHz. The GTX 1070 gets 8GB of RAM, too, but in the GDDR5 flavor, with 2,048 cores and a boost clock of 1,645MHz. The GeForce GTX 1060 gets 1,280 CUDA cores, 6GB of GDDR5, and a boost clock speed of 1,670MHz. SLI is supported on the GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070.

While the GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 GPUs will go into the larger laptops, the GeForce GTX 1060 has the potential to drastically change portable gaming.

In addition to improving laptop performance and overclocking, Nvidia is also improving laptop displays with the launch of the first 120Hz G-SYNC laptop displays, in addition to the first 2560x1440 G-SYNC displays. G-SYNC will free you from screen tearing, stuttering, and VSync-induced input lag.

When gaming on the go, running at full speed with all of Pascal’s power will drain your battery faster than necessary - if you’re playing at 120 FPS, why not run at 60 FPS instead to extend the length of time you can play? To do this without fuss, GeForce Experience includes a user-configurable option called "BatteryBoost". Select the framerate and graphics settings you desire when running on battery power, and GeForce Experience will do the rest.

To further harness the efficiency of the Pascal architecture, Nvidia has refined the BatteryBoost power-saving technology for the release of the new GTX 10-Series laptops. This new iteration of BatteryBoost better-controls framerates to prevent hitching and stuttering, whilst also optimizing CPU-GPU communication to reduce power usage and deliver an unplugged gaming experience.

10-Series Pascal laptops also include support for every feature announced alongside the desktop Pascal GPUs earlier this year. As such, you’ll be able to capture screenshots with NVIDIA Ansel, accelerate and enhance Virtual Reality experiences with VRWorks, watch and play HDR content via a connected external HDR display, push the limits of your GPU with GPU Boost 3.0, and correctly display games across multiple external monitors with Simultaneous Multi-Projection.
