Last year Nike decided to make the future real when they debuted their pair of self-lacing sneakers, a nod to the movie franchise Back to the Future. The company then promised that they would begin selling these sneakers in 2016 and the good news is that it looks like Nike will be keeping to their word.
The company has officially announced the HyperAdapt 1.0, the company’s first commercially available pair of self-lacing sneakers. As you can see in the video, the HyperAdapt 1.0 is very different in terms of design compared to what the company unveiled last year, which we guess is a good thing since this looks so more sleek.
However last year’s design wasn’t surprising as according to Nike, the original idea was a snowboard boot, although the only downside to this idea was that it had to have an external generator, but this problem was solved and even tested over the years, resulting in the pair of shoes we are seeing now.
According to Nike’s Tinker Hatfield, “Wouldn’t it be great if a shoe, in the future, could sense when you needed to have it tighter or looser? Could it take you even tighter than you’d normally go if it senses you really need extra snugness in a quick maneuver? That’s where we’re headed. In the future, product will come alive.”
No word on pricing or a specific release date, but the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 is slated for a release this holiday season and will be available in three different colors. It will also only be available to Nike+ members, so if you’re not a member yet you probably should sign up.
