As it stands, Apple’s iPhone and iPad displays currently rely on LCD technology. However we can see Apple possibly shifting technology to OLED thanks to the Apple Watch, but the bigger question is when will they officially introduce that technology to their mobile lineup? Turns out we might not have to wait too long.
According to a report from Kevin Wang who is the Technology Research Director at IHS, he claims that come 2016 we could be looking at iPhones and iPads that will finally incorporate the use of OLED display technology. Given that 2016’s iPhone is expected to be a major revamp (Apple usually introduce major new features and designs every 2 years), it wouldn’t surprising if OLED could be a “new” feature Apple will bring to the table.
Plenty of Android OEMs already rely on OLED technology, such as Samsung. However the report claims Apple will not use Samsung’s AMOLED technology and while it was not stated who are possible candidates, it has been speculated that LG could be a possibility. A report from earlier this year also suggested a less-known company by the name of JOLED who could supply the display panels to Apple.
There has been a bit of back and forth on this topic for a while now. At the start of the year, it was suggested that Foxconn was a possible candidate, but a couple of months later we heard the rumors that Apple might not even include the display tech in 2016’s iPhones. In any case we suppose it might be a bit too early to tell now, so take it with a grain of salt.
