Sony Mobile Communications will amend its policy for the launch of flagship models by releasing only one new model a year, instead of two models currently, according to sources at Taiwan's handset supply chain.
A slowdown in hardware competition for smartphones and the maturing high-end smartphone segment have prompted Sony Mobile to modify its roadmap for flagship models, said the sources.
Sony Mobile will focus its resources on developing high-end models, the sources added.
Apple is so far the sole smartphone vendor that adopts such a policy to launch one flagship model a year. No other vendors have applied the same strategy for fear of losing out market share to rival vendors due to a lack of new flagship models.
Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Huawei are adopting the policy of releasing a new flagship model each in the first and second halves of each year.
