NHK logoNHK Media Technology will hold an event next month where it will unveil the world’s first '8K (7680 x 4320) 3D' film as well as 4K 3D surgery photographing system.

The event will be held in celebration of NHK Media Technology's 30th anniversary during the period of International Broadcast Equipment Exhibition (Inter BEE) in November (19-21).

NHK Media Technology, an affiliate of Japan’s NHK and responsible for the technical operations of NHK programs, will showcase a short 8K 3D film, developed using all the 3D technologies built over the past 25 years, modified existing 3D equipment to support 8K and will also support 22.2 channel stereophonic sound.

During the same event, NHK will also preview a simple editing system for 8K video that allows efficient video editing during 8K playback, and a 2K to 4K video encoder.

NHK has also developed a 4K 3D surgery photographing system, which uses two small l 4K cameras to shoot detailed 3D images during surgery that can be shared among six 4K and three 8K screens.

Japan has established a leading position in the 8K field starting with the release of Sony’s F65 8K camera released in 2012. Sharp has also built an 8K screen. Japan sees the 2018 as the starting year of an 8K era.

On the other hand, Korea's Samsung and LG Electronics have not been talking much about 8K so far. LG has promisd to to release an 8K TV next year and Samsung has just showed off their 8K TV prototypes.

Microsoft will also support 8K in Windows 10 and DisplayPort (DP) has enabled 8K transmission in its 1.3 version unveiled last month.
