After numerous leaks (as is the case with impending iPhone launches), the iPhone 6 is finally upon us. And as has been widely reported for the past 6 months, there are two versions of the iPhone that will be available and both of which look exactly like the leaked photos (including the protruding camera lens).
The first is the 4.7” iPhone 6, which comes with a 4.7” 1334 x 750 display. The second model is the iPhone 6 Plus which has a Full HD (1080p) display. Both machines are powered by a new Apple A8 processor (and companion M8 motion coprocessor). Apple says that the A8 features 2 billion transistors, is built on a 20nm process, and is 17 percent smaller than the previous generation A7. In addition, the A8 has a 20 percent faster CPU and a 50 percent faster GPU.
On a side note, Apple didn't mention anything about RAM size on the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but previous reports have stated that both models would feature 1GB (the same amount as found on the iPhone 5/5C/5S). However, GeekBench 3 figures which were released before the Apple Keynote suggest that the 1GB figure is indeed accurate (along with a clockspeed of 1.4GHz):
We'll have to wait until more people get the devices to further confirm this news.
Other specs include 802.11ac, Wi-Fi calling, 150Mbps LTE connectivity, and VoLTE capabilities. Apple has also seen fit to improve battery life — 3G browsing has increased from 8 hours on the iPhone 5S to 10 hours on the iPhone 6 (12 hours on the iPhone 6 Plus) and 3G talk time has been increased from 10 hours on the iPhone 5S to 14 hours on the iPhone 6 (and 24 hours on the iPhone 6 Plus).
Apple has also improved the camera with a brand new sensor, although it still stands at 8MP (same as the iPhone 5, iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S). The camera includes optical image stabilization (only on the iPhone 6 Plus), 5-element lens, an f/2.2 aperture and an updated version of True Tone Flash. The camera can record 1080p video at 30fps, 60fps, 120fps, or 240fps.
The iPhone 6 comes in at 6.9mm thick while the larger iPhone 6 Plus is 7.1mm thick — both are thinner than the 7.6mm-thick iPhone 5s.
An added perk for customers that choose the iPhone 6 Plus is a new landscape mode which provides side-by-side.
The iPhone 6 will be available in 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB configurations for $199, $299, and $399 respectively with a two-year contract. The iPhone 6 Plus will be available in 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities for $299, $399, and $499 respectively with a two-year contract.
Pre-orders for both models open up on Friday, and the devices will ship on September 19.
