Samsung to unveil virtual reality headset, bendable TVs

Samsung logoSamsung Electronics’ virtual reality (VR) headset, the Gear VR, has received its telecommunication equipment certification in Korea and is expected to appear a day before the opening of IFA 2014 on September 4.

According to the National Radio Research Agency, Samsung registered the Gear VR (model name: SM-R320) at the agency on August 22. Developed by Samsung Electronics and Oculus, the headset uses special lenses and sensors for a VR experience. It is expected to be similar in design and function to Sony’s Morpheus, which is a goggle-type device connected to the PlayStation 4. As is the case with the Oculus Rift, it provides 3D images while recognizing the facial movement of the user for use in output devices like a mouse and keyboard.

The VR headset will likely to come with Tizen OS, in that the OS has been applied to most of the Gear-titled products of Samsung Electronics.

Staying with Samsung, the company will have on display at IFA 2014 bendable TVs, while LG Electronics strategically focuses on TVs with OLED panels.

Samsung will release a new TV with a 105-inch bendable display, the world’s largest, at the IFA consumer electronics show in Berlin on Sept. 5. Bendable TVs allow the viewer to manipulate angles to enjoy both flat and curved screens.

At the show, Samsung will display over 120 TVs including curved Ultra HD TVs with 105-inch, 78-inch and 65-inch screens as well as bendable ones.
