Toshiba roadmap shows full-touch phone focus

Toshiba logoToshiba had its long-term smartphone plans revealed today through a leak by Greek site Techblog and is now known to be focusing very heavily on full touchscreen devices. After the TG01 launches this summer, the TG02 will appear at the end of the year with an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 as well as a water-resistant shell. It should have the same 4.1-inch touchscreen, 3G, GPS and likely Wi-Fi.

The TG03 would resemble the TG02 but trade weather resistance for a 5-megapixel camera and 5.1-channel sound output. It would also ship at the same time as its sibling.

Two other form factors are simultaneously due and would include the K01, a device like the TG01 with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a 3.2-megapixel camera, and the K02, a device with a 3.5-inch touchscreen and a notebook-style folding design.

A final device known as the L01 would be a mobile Internet device and carry a 7-inch touch display as well as a wireless keyboard.

If built and on schedule, the designs would represent a major turnaround for Toshiba, which until the TG01 had primarily relied on conventional if high-end devices. The TG01 is directly positioned as an iPhone challenger with an extremely slim design and a faster 1GHz Qualcomm processor that would permit advanced media playback.
