Mainly because AMD's Fusion series APUs to be launched in early 2011 have strong graphics capabilities and high performance/cost ratios, AMD is expected to see its global market share for notebook platforms alone rise from 11% in 2010 to 15% in 2011 and that for notebook, desktop and server platforms together from 20% to 25% and may advance further to 30% in 2012, according to Taiwan-based notebook and motherboard makers.
The sources believe that strong performance/cost ratio as well as low power consumption will give AMD an advantage in the netbook segment and boost its overall processor market share.
Despite that Intel is set to promote its new Sandy Bridge processor aggressively at CES 2011, since motherboard makers are planning to raise their shipment shares of AMD-based motherboards, the new strategy is expected to help AMD win some global market share.
To counter, Intel is expected to expand its cooperation with Nvidia to promote Atom-based netbooks with Nvidia's graphics solution, the sources said.
